MO'KALAMITY # REGGAE

HER FIRST TITLE WAS CALLED "AFRICA". A WHOLE SYMBOL FOR THIS CAPE VERDE NATIVE RAISED IN PARIS AREA. SHE WAS INSPIRED BY CARIBBEAN AND AFRO-AMERICAN MUSIC AND FOR HER, REGGAE WAS OBVIOUS.

As self-taught musician, Mo’Kalamity created her own band in 2004, with her musicians The Wizards. Her first album, Warriors of Light, was released in 2007. It was well received, and reissued in 2008. Mo’ quickly got a place in France’s reggae environment mainly owned by men. Her silky and melodic voice is mainly based on reggae roots. In 2011, she signed her second album, Deeper Revolution, which won 3 nominations for 2011 Cabo Verde Awards.

In autumn 2013 Mo’, still on the independence road, issued her third album, Freedom of the Soul, on her Sofia Thea Records label. Between spiritual _ and protesting compositions, the singer, author, composer required “urgent awakening of consciences”. After three years of concerts in France and abroad, Mo’, accompanied by her faithful Wizards, raised the interest of a wider and wider audience: sold out concerts in Paris (Cabaret Sauvage, Divan du monde...), noted passages in Bulgaria, in the mythical Glastonbury Festival (UK), in Réunion, as well as in Spain, Germany, Poland, Canada, Senegal, Ivory Coast...

At the beginning of 2017, she flew away to Jamaica. This trip was “necessary”, on order to catch vibration on reggae land, beforestarting her next album creation. In Kingston, she met Sly & Robbie, duo of legendary musicians and producers who were among her major influences, notably for their collaborations with big names such as Black Uhuru, Gregory Isaac, Jacob Miller...

She recorded 4 titles, arranged by just as bright Robbie Lyn on keyboard, Dalton Brown and Mickey Chan on guitar, Dean Fraser on saxophone, Sly Dunbar on drums and Robbie Shakespeare on bass.

Back to Paris, Mo’s main wish was to go back to Kingston. One month later that was done. Back to the Anchor Studio, accompanied by Sly & Robbie, she records her new album, in pure Live Jamaican tradition.

The result of an artistic encounter with the legendary duo multi-nominated for the Grammy Awards, who expressed her music exactly as she expected. On the same wave length as the singer, the Jamaican duo arranged and enhanced these new tracks with all the genius they expressed for decades... Everything was recorded one shot live, the old way !

A fourth album made in Jamaica will, once again, be very personal since, like for all her previous albums, Mo’Kalamity wrote and composed most titles (two were composed by Sly & Robbie).

“Mo’kalamity meets Sly & Robbie - One Love Vibration” will be released in january 2018.
